Hello everyone,
As some of you might know already, we have just entered the Alan Turing Year (ATY, http://www.turingcentenary.eu/), a centenary celebration of the life and work of Alan Turing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing),
who was, without doubt, one of the most influential scientists of the
twentieth century as well as one of the founding fathers of computer
science.
The CS community throughout the world will be paying tribute to
Alan Turing's legacy during this
year. (See
http://www.turingcentenary.eu/ for a list of events that are part of the ATY, including those at RU.)
ICE-TCS and the
School of Computer Science at Reykjavik University, in collaboration with the
Icelandic Mathematical Society,
CADIA and
IIIM.
will offer their small contribution to the ATY by hosting a series of
events, which we hope will have some interest also for the general
public and for RU staff and students as a whole. See
http://icetcs.ru.is/turingyear2012RU.html
for the preliminary schedule of the events so far.
The first event in the series will be a talk by Luca Aceto that will
take place on Thursday, 12 January, from 16:30 till 17:30 in room
M1.05. The talk, which is entitled
Alan Turing: The Father of Computer Science, will introduce the figure of Alan
Turing, present the seminar series and highlight the role that
Turing has played in the development of the computer and on the theory of computing.
We hope that you will attend the events and that you will encourage your friends to do so too.
